Aliens were finally brought back to the stores in 92' with a whole new toy line. Produced by Kenner again, the line added a twist that the Alien would partially resemble it's host. This idea may have been spawned from a early version of the script of Alien 3, the "Dog Alien". As for the Marines, Humans & Androids, they were loosely based off the characters from the Aliens movie. The line continued for 3 years until it's demise. Rumor has it the demise was based on Kenner shipping and not issuing many new figures to keep intrest. A total of 27 Marines and Aliens, and 4 vehicles were produced for the Aliens series.
Series 1 of Aliens included all the Marines Ripley, Hicks, Apone, Drake & Bishop. The Aliens were the Scorpion Alien, Bull Alien and Gorillia Alien. The Alien Queen and Power Loader quickly followed in a few months. Each figure came with a comic and the Aliens came with Face Huggers. Rumor mill back in 1992 stated a Flying Queen was out, though the actual release was half a year to a year down the road. I also heard that there was a 2nd sculpt to this piece, which I still cannot confirm
Series 2 of Aliens toys consisted of one Marine, Atax and a few new Aliens. Original Aliens were repackaged on new backers and were shipped in 2nd series. The new Aliens, which were released at various times over the year were, Rhino Alien, Mantis Alien, Snake Alien, Queen Face Hugger & Flying Queen. The Aliens were still being issued with the Comic, but no Face Huggers. Also issued was the Evac Fighter, Stinger XT-37. The Hovertread was also released, but a few months down the road. Also released in the awesome Aliens Vs. Predator 2-Pack. This piece came with a "regular" Warrior Alien and a Predator. This 2-Pack also contained the last comic book produced, issue #13. Right around this time Kenner releases a "Special Edition Predator" Mail-In. This Predator is all Glow in the Dark and was Mail-Away only. Having individual new toys slowly coming out lead to the down fall of this series, which can be seen in Series 3.
Series 3 had three new Marines! Vasquez, O'Mally and Hudson. But since the Marines produced before were peg warmers, retailers were not interested and they were only produced in the UK. The first new Aliens to be shipped were the Panther and Killer Crab. These Aliens were the only new Aliens for most of the year. A new vehicle was being produced, the Mini Drop Ship. This piece ended not being produced, probably for the reason of being a shelf warmer. Also being produced at the time was the Predator toy line and a Aliens Vs. Predator two pack.
Series 4 was the end of Aliens and Predator series. Kenner was going to release the Electronic Lasershot Predator and Swarm Alien in North America, but retailers didn't want them so most ended up over sea's while a few did appear in North America. The last Alien was produced in 1995, series 4, and seems to be the toughest of all regular Aliens. It is the Arachnid Alien. It was produced so late, it never appeared on the backers. The Last Predator to be produced was the 10" Electronic Predator which did make a few releases in Toys' R Us.
Though the series was gone, a few Aliens toys did appear over the next few years. in 1997, Toys R'Us had a exclusive 10" inch 2-Pack of Aliens Vs. Predator. This 2-Pack had a 10" version of the once Unproduced Acid Alien. The Predator was a new figure and was very detailed. This pack was sold as the Aliens & Predator 10th Anniversary Giftset.
Kay-Bee in 1997-1998 got their own exclusive set of Aliens. These Aliens were recolors of original ones, placed in a new bubble and backer. Kay-Bee also had specially produced a 12" 2-Pack of Aliens Vs. Corp. Hicks.
With the success of the last batch, Kay-Bee had 5 new exclusive pieces for 1999. These were 2-Packs of Aliens Vs. Marines. The Aliens were all recolored and the Marines were as well. The best part is that the original UK only Marines were reissued for these 2-packs.
Kay-Bee also had released in 1999 and whole new Aliens line, Alien Hive Wars. Kenner instead of reissuing old Aliens, produced Aliens and P redators that were never produced for the original line! With 6 figures total for this series, it was a good hit with collectors who never saw the figures before.
Aliens & Predators still have a big following, and will reappear in toys stores again some day! Kenner still had many new Aliens yet to be produced, and some which still have not. Check out the Prototypes section and read all about them......................
Later in the year, when intrest is dwindling, Kenner produces a Night Cougar Alien (repaint of Panther), Wild Boar Alien and King Alien. Around this time the Alien Queen Hive Playset was produced, which was a perfect rendition of the Queen from the movie Aliens and her egg sack. Though there was few new Aliens figures for the year (4), kenner produced 6 new Predator figures and a Blade Fighter Vehicle. It seems to me that intrest was mainly in Aliens and not Predator, and this was proven in the rough Series 4.
