Prototypes are the pieces that can only come from the company and were used in the process of making the toys. These prototypes can range from the original wax sculptings, to test shot and first shot figures. There are many steps and many changes to toys before they are produced. Not only the toys, but the packages as well. These are desired by collectors due to rarity and uniqueness.

Prototypes also include unproduced toys, as well as concepts that were never formed into actual toys. Currently there are no unproduced figures known. Many have discussed about the art of the Sage Beasts. The art for these three can only be found in the Laser Beasts book from Takara. From translations of the book, these characters were created for the story in which the art accompanies it. They were never designed to be toys.

Test Shot Battle Beasts

A number of various colored Battle Beasts have appeared on the market. They are well made and bear full markings of Takara / Hasbro. They come from sources who claim to be from Hasbro, while some appear in California all the way to United Kingdom. I honestly have no clue, but odds are that these are truly test shots. The only thing that makes them strange is that they all appeared from differenet parts of the world in the same time period.

This is a Ferocius Tiger is Neon Green. It probably is a test shot, but no one is sure because a neon green test shot has not appeared before.
