Dunegons & Dragons was released in 1983, they tested the toy market for the ever popular Dunegons & Dragons game. First series Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) are the most common of the toy line. They do not have the battle Mattic Lever actions on their back. Strongheart, Warduke, Elkhorn, Zarak were later re-issued in 2nd series with battle mattic actions. As for the 5" figures, the were also just poseable, the later 2nd Series versions included a "Sheild Shooting action", which these 1st never had.
The figures averaged at the now common 3 3/4" height to a 5" series, and they all came with a variety of accesories. Their detail was uncanny, as so were the bright colors that were used for plastic and paint. As for display, this toy line ranks at the top of all toy lines.
In addition to the figures, 5 creatures were made. Destrier (Stronghearts Horse), Nightmare (Wardukes Horse) and Bronze Dragon (Stronghearts Dragon) had seats in which the figure could slide into. This was a similar function used in the Vintage Star Wars Taun Taun. Ljn also produced the good Dragonne, as well as the hiddeous monster called the Hook-Horror. For more info and pictures of these monsters, go to the Creatures section.
Unlike other toy lines, only one playset was produced. The Fortress of Fangs was a large, two level piece. For more information and pictures, visit Playsets
Varations: Varations did pop up in the first series. LJN produced "Peralay" under another name, "Melf". The action figure came under two different names, but there was no difference in the toy or the packaging (except the name being switched).
Varations:As for other MOC varations, recently brought up is the MOC 1st series with from Macao. These versions had the stalagmites appearing all over the top and bottom of the card. The stalagmites of these are highly detailed and are completely different than the first runs of 1st series D&D backers. The artwork for the characters was also partially enhanced. A few examples such as Mercion now shows a yellow type magic emmiting from her staff, as well as green spirals of magic emit from Kelek's hands on these Macao backers. As very more subtle differences, the header of "Poseable Player Characters" was changed to "Fully Articulated Player Characters".
Varations:Carded figures from Canada come with bilingual packages. Figures produced in Europe were produced by Matchbox and say Matchbox instead of LJN.
Varations:Strongheart was produced in both a "grey" color, as well as a "silver" color. The silver version is a tid bit tougher to find than the grey version of Strongheart.
Unproduced: Of the 12 Figures scheduled to be released, Skylla was never produced. For more information on her and pictures, visit Prototypes
Fun Facts:Who is Valkeer? Most of you are wondering who is Valkeer that price guides keep listing in first series. Well Valkeer is actually from second series, and is unproduced. Big error on the parts of Toyfare and White Guide (as well as you other crummy Mags).
